Beautiful/Decay magazine and the Kopeikin Gallery celebrate the release of Beautiful/Decay’s Issue Z with a retrospective exhibition of 26 artists appearing in the current issue. Please join us for the opening or come see the show during it's now extended run.

To commemorate reaching the culmination of the alphabet, Beautiful/Decay has selected 26 exemplary artists to create a unique visual work for the show, using the publication’s name, Beautiful/Decay, as the basis of their conceptual framework. Each of the artists was selected from the magazine’s 10-year history in art and design publishing. The exhibit acknowledges each of the artists’ influential contributions to the arts, and highlights Beautiful/Decay’s prominent role in serving as a platform for creative expression. The myriad results showcase an exploration into what the publication represents to the creative community.

Participating artists include: Aaron Noble, Ai Kijima, Ala Ebtekar, Alex Trochut, Aya Kato, Barnaby Whitfield, Charlie Roberts, David Shaw, Eric Yahnker, Erik Parker, Erika Somogyi, Gary Taxali, Jacob Magraw, Julia Randall, Mark Schoening, Michael Scoggins, Pearl C. We’re sad to announce 31GRAND is closing after nine wonderful years. We’ve had a great run, and all the artists we have worked with have been such amazingly wonderful talented people. Please join us on this Saturday for the exhibition, Death is Not the End, to celebrate their talent and toast a sad farewell.

Death Is Not The End will be a ONE-NIGHT ONLY retrospective group exhibition; artists from all stages of 31GRAND’s past and present have been invited to choose one work to be hung. This large, diverse show will include assemblage, animated videos, drawings, photography, pastels, and paintings in a range of materials and styles. The result will not only be a unique demonstration of the amazing range of our artists and a poignant reminder of the past decade, but will also be a celebration—because friends making merry is how we would like to commemorate 31GRAND. We started out as a family and want to end as a family. The art and the artist are always what has been truly important.

Please join us for some reminiscing, some carousing, some art, and some old friends.

Run by owners and co-directors Megan Bush and Heather Stephens, 31GRAND opened in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in 1999 and moved in July 2007 to our current home in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Over the course of nine years, we have shown painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, and video by local, national, and international artists. As one of the founding members of the Williamsburg Gallery Association, we have been committed to introducing the public to talented emerging artists as well as working with mid-career and established artists.

31GRAND is pleased to announce Barnaby Whitfield’s third solo exhibition with the gallery.

In what he views as the final installment in a trilogy for 31GRAND; Whitfield’s Episode VI has the Ewoks drunk and randy with no sense of the impending tragedy, as water licks at their treetop climbing toes (except in Barnaby’s world the Ewoks are more likely to be Abraham Lincoln clones.) Narratives woven through the last two shows crash and burn, then intertwine again to take on new life in this boisterous suite of pastel paintings. Barnaby Whitfield considers his works on paper, paintings, as defined in this beloved and oft cited quote from the Pastel Society Of America “Generally, the ground is toned paper - if the ground is covered completely with pastel, the work is considered a Pastel Painting; a Pastel Sketch shows much of the ground. When protected by fixative and glass, pastel is the most permanent of all media, for it never cracks, darkens or yellows.” However he requests you do not ask him to quote it at the artist’s reception.

From lovingly using his art dealer to anthropomorphize the ‘Bird Flu’ to finding fictional passion with Hernan Bas on a men seeking men website, we continue to get amusing and rather untrustworthy glimpses into Whitfield’s experience in the art world. And besides an over all theme the artist states as “sexualizing the environmental crisis within the context of American politics” we also see the end to Barnaby’s quest for his real parents (Whitfield was one of those children that always suspected they were adopted even though they knew quite well they were not), and a startling turn of events in his ongoing Clonie series (a character created when the momentarily impoverished artist decided to sell nudes on eBay inadvertently gaining the attention of 31GRAND and being welcomed into the fold.)
